1951 Studebaker Commander Starlight Coupe

Trev & Dianne Halstead
Rukuhia, New Zealand

Trev visualized his 51 coupe as a traditional custom with as much Studebaker content as possible. He started by removing the body and boxing the frame. Extra plates were added for strength. The front of the frame was Z cut 4" and the body was channeled 3" over the frame to make it lower. The front suspension is stock with air bags controlled by an A.V.S. system. All chassis accessories and brackets were fabricated from stainless steel and were polished or ceramic coated. RHD Steering is provided by a 1965 Studebaker Cruiser steering box linked by a Jaguar to Toyota joint with a Yarris electric power assist unit. The front disc brakes are H.Q. Holden calipers and Falcon rotors powered by a VH44 inline brake booster. Rear brakes are standard drums and the master cylinder is stock with a hill holder cylinder in the system.

The drive train consists of a 259 ci Studebaker engine that was bored and stroked to 299 ci with a lot of internal upgrades. The block was shaved smooth and painted to match the car. Avanti motor mounts were used to set the engine lower in the chassis. The Edmunds intake manifold has 2 Stromberg W/W carbs with mini air filters to clear the hood. Exhaust is through Avanti R2 headers that have been polished and ceramic coated. Trev hand-made the 2’’ stainless exhaust system and 3’’ stainless lake pipes with three 2’’ outlets on each side. The transmission is a late model Studebaker Borg-Warner T86 3 speed with a long tail overdrive and a custom made shifter. The one piece driveshaft was made using a Studebaker Hawk shaft. Trev fabricated a custom 4 bar system supporting a narrowed Studebaker Dana 44 rear end with 3.31:1 ratio.

The obvious changes to this car are visual. The top was chopped 4-1/2’’ at the front and 3-1/2’’ at the rear and the front of  the roof was peaked to accommodate a split windshield. The rain gutters were shaved and the window surrounds enlarged to fill the gaps. Trev made steel patterns for the wraparound windows at the rear and had Visual Plastics mould acrylic sheets with a light green tint to fit the openings. The grill is from a 1950 Champion with a 51 bullet cast in bronze and chromed. The hood was extended 1¼’’ over the grill to compensate for the removal of the eyebrows and a bulge was added to clear the air filters. The door corners are rounded and the handles were shaved and are opened with power door locks. Trev removed the front bumper and welded the front and rear fenders to the body. He added custom made skirts, taillights and bumper at the rear. Wheels are 15" x 6" with whitewalls and custom made hub caps.

Trev made the interior full custom. The upper dash panel and glove box were donated by a 1947 Champion and custom made instrument pods in the full console and dash were angled to face the driver. The steering wheel is from a HQ Holden with a custom made center and 56 Studebaker horn button and the dash has custom alloy bullet knobs. Front seats are Honda and the stock rear seat was split to straddle the console. Midnight Upholstery stitched the interior in Teal Green Naugahyde.

After the body was prepped, it was painted with Cromax 840R epoxy prior to one coat of acrylic lacquer primer. A custom color that Trev calls Starlite Teal was mixed in acrylic lacquer and sprayed in 20 thin coats before color sanding and polishing.
